Inside the doublet, over the shoulder area and under the arm is a layer of wool that is pad stitched to the canvas. This will make the shoulder strong enough to support the sleeve without puckers, much like today's shoulder pad. The line you see down the centreback is a seam, butt joined together with a baseball stitch. |
